Vietnam Open 2026: Nguyen Tien Minh's win and the men's singles transition puzzle
Vietnam Open 2026, giải cầu lông BWF Super 100 từ 8 đến 13/9/2026, quy tụ hơn 300 VĐV từ 27 quốc gia/vùng lãnh thổ. Nguyễn Tiến Minh thắng vòng loại đơn nam trước Nguyễn Hoàng Thái Sơn. Lê Đức Phát chấn thương đầu gối và gót chân. Nguồn: Ban tổ chức Vietnam Open 2026. Hỏi: Minh gặp ai ở vòng chính? Đáp: Zhe Ying Wu (Đài Bắc Trung Hoa). Hỏi: Lê Đức Phát có thi đấu? Đáp: Có, phải tiêm giảm đau vì chấn thương.
At 43, Nguyen Tien Minh is still standing on court as a qualifying entrant in men's singles at Vietnam Open 2026. Fans may see a timeless veteran, but this win over Nguyen Hoang Thai Son should not be read as a comeback. Instead, it reveals the lack of depth in Vietnamese men's singles.
The BWF Super 100 tournament runs from September 8 to 13 and attracts more than 300 players from 27 countries and territories. Nguyen Tien Minh, ranked 254th in the world, had to go through qualifying. He beat Nguyen Hoang Thai Son, a player trained primarily for doubles. That win puts Minh against Zhe Ying Wu of Chinese Taipei in the main draw. Meanwhile, Le Duc Phat, Vietnam's top men's singles hope, is struggling with knee and heel injuries and needed pain-killing injections. His wife watched from the stands. Nguyen Hai Dang also exited early.
Minh won not by smashing harder or moving faster. He exploited the weak spots of a doubles player forced into singles. Thai Son has power and speed but is used to the tighter space of doubles. In singles, the open court and non-stop up-and-down movement expose him. Watching the match, I saw Minh push the shuttle to the back corners and then suddenly drop it short. That rhythm requires patience and reading, not power. A young doubles player will often rely on habit and then lose steam when stretched.
Still, the value of this qualifying win is limited. The opponent was not a true singles specialist, and match statistics were not detailed. Sân chơi không cân sức, nhưng trái bóng vẫn tròn và vẫn lăn. If Minh had not exploited those weaknesses, the result could have been different.
Le Duc Phat is the real concern. He is playing with injuries and painkillers. His wife in the stands is a reminder that player support is about crisis management, not prevention. Tactics may lose on the board, but dignity is lost once and for all. Minh can manage on his own at 43, but the younger players need better sports medicine.
Regional rivals are pushing youth development. Nguyen Thuy Linh will face 19-year-old Xu Wen Jing in women's singles. Vietnam's singles pool, both men and women, remains thin.
Vietnam Open 2026 should not be remembered only for one qualifying win. The real issue is that a 43-year-old, ranked 254th, is still leading the way. If the sporting system does not change, similar stories will repeat. When the shuttle stops flying, only love for the game remains. Minh is playing with that love, but Vietnamese badminton cannot rely on one man's love to solve its generational problem.
