When three centre-backs become fear, Vietnamese football forgets the road to goal

On an April afternoon at Thong Nhat Stadium, during a National Cup group-stage match, I witnessed a sight that brought back memories of the cold stone bench in 2026. A team in blue held the ball but dared not advance into the opponent's half. Their three centre-backs formed a static line, passing sideways over forty times without crossing midfield. Many Vietnamese coaches adopt three centre-backs not out of tactical conviction, but out of fear. They are afraid of being blamed after a heavy defeat. With three defenders, they can always point to the system, saying it did its job but luck was missing. Yet a true back three requires ball-playing centre-backs who can break lines. Vietnamese centre-backs are strong in duels but slow and weak in possession. When they operate in a back three, they only produce tedious sideways passing, leaving wing-backs isolated and high. A deeper irony is that the weaker clubs suffer most. They lose their attacking edge and never exploit counterattacks, because their only striker also has to defend deep. The back three was designed to create overloads, but in Vietnam it simply becomes a five-man defence with no transition plan. Young players are taught to clear the ball instead of building from the back, and the creative spark of players like Nguyen Van Quyet and Nguyen Quang Hai is wasted without support. What worries me most is that this trend has crept into the national team setup. At the AFF Cup, when facing faster and more technical opponents like Thailand, this slow, static back line will be exposed. The solution is not necessarily to abandon three centre-backs. It is to change the mindset: a centre-back must learn to become a playmaker, and coaches must stop hiding behind numbers. Vietnam can only move forward when a coach is brave enough to step out of that comfortable block and put an extra creative player in midfield.
