In the modern era of the EuroLeague, Olympiacos and Baskonia have been drawn against each other on opening night seven times. On the previous six occasions, the Piraeus club won every single one. That number is now the backdrop against which Greek and Spanish media are framing every prediction about the upcoming season opener.

An opening night in the EuroLeague, however, does not run on the logic of numbers accumulated over years. It runs on the logic of rosters assembled three weeks ago, of rookies who have never smelled the air of a packed arena, and of coaches who must decide whether to hide their cards or gamble on the very first hand.

What is worth noting is that the EuroLeague does not build its calendar by rolling dice. A pairing that repeats on opening night seven times is rare enough to make Baskonia fans feel they have been cast as the familiar guests at someone else's ceremony.

Kobi Simmons understands this better than anyone.

At 29, Simmons enters his second EuroLeague season as a fixture in Baskonia's backcourt. Last season the American played 31 games, averaging 22 minutes and 10 seconds per night, 11.1 points, 1.3 rebounds, 3 assists, 0.7 steals, 0.1 blocks and 1.5 turnovers.

Those are the numbers of a player doing exactly his job: efficient enough to keep his spot, not explosive enough to become a star. And that kind of player is usually the most honest voice about a team's condition before tip-off.

"I think we're ready. We've had good practices lately," Simmons told local media. "We have players who are rookies in the EuroLeague and they're trying to adjust, but we had very hard practices trying to integrate them as quickly as possible."

"Playing the champions on opening night will be a big test for us."

He did not dodge the gap in quality: "It will be a difficult game, but we'll try to come out on the floor full of energy and play hard. Olympiacos is a big team with a big coach and big players."

What stands out in Simmons' words is not the politeness. It is that he describes Baskonia with the phrase "new players" several times in a single answer. A team that calls itself a work in progress is a team that has not yet locked in its system.

What "reigning champion" actually means

In European basketball, the phrase "reigning champion" is not just a banner hanging from the arena ceiling. It is a way of playing. The champion knows exactly what to do in the final four minutes of a tight game, knows who will hold the ball, knows which possession must be swapped, where to commit a foul, when to slow a quarter down.

Baskonia does not know that yet this season.

Simmons continued: "Last year we surprised some teams, but this year we have new players, full of hunger and willing to learn. I think we'll play with excitement."

This is the crux. A team with many newcomers is not weakened by a lack of talent; it is weakened by a lack of shared reflexes. In the first half of an opener, when the opponent pushes the pace and switches defences repeatedly, a group that has not spent enough time together dissolves into five individuals standing in the right spots at the wrong rhythm.

Based on my experience watching early-season games, a pattern repeats almost mechanically: the team that keeps at least four players who have played together for more than one season usually wins about two thirds of its opening games, regardless of the talent gap. System stability beats individual excitement, at least in October.

Six wins out of six mean nothing

This is where I want to bet against the consensus.

The media are building the story around Olympiacos' six-for-six record in opening meetings with Baskonia. It sounds decisive. But unpack it, and most of those games came at a time when Olympiacos owned a system shaped over years, with a core that barely changed. That streak is a product of continuity, not of the jersey.

This season's Olympiacos is still strong. But a big club walking into an opener always carries one very specific risk: it does not yet need to go all out. For a team like Olympiacos, October is a phase of experimentation, minute distribution, and fitness checks on players returning from a long summer. For Baskonia, October is all they have to make a statement.

That asymmetry of motivation is usually ignored by stat sheets, and it is why openers so often end in the strangest ways. People remember six out of six. I want them to stay for what lies behind it.

In many years in this job, I have learned that opening games are where stat sheets are wrong most often. A month of rewinding tape of openers taught me more than ten years of loudly asserting things on air.

Where I could be wrong

If Baskonia lose by double digits inside the first half, my argument collapses entirely, and I will be the first to admit it.

The risk is that the Spanish side can lose its composure very quickly when the opponent opens with a run of three-pointers. For a new group, excitement is a double-edged sword: it carries you through the first half and betrays you in the third quarter.

I may also be underestimating how fast Baskonia's newcomers integrate. Some new rosters need only five friendly games to look like they have played together for three years, and Simmons is the kind of player who can pull an entire group into his own rhythm.

The call

This will be a game where the gap in class does not show on the scoreboard before the twentieth minute. Kobi Simmons will be Baskonia's most frequent ball handler and will likely exceed his 11.1-point average from last season.

The real question is not whether Olympiacos win, but how long Baskonia can stay lucid. If they are still in it entering the fourth quarter, their brand of basketball this season will be worth following for a long time.
